Thirteen artists, distributed across a wall without hierarchy—no centerpiece, no dominant focal point, meaning produced through proximity and adjacency rather than composition. The arrangement is itself an argument. In his 1997 essay "From Object to Field," architect and theorist Stan Allen proposed field conditions as an alternative to the dominant logic of architecture as autonomous object—a model in which meaning and form emerge not from individual elements but from the rules governing how elements are distributed and related across a surface or space. In a field, Allen writes, the individual unit matters less than the overall behavior of the system, and the whole cannot be predicted from the part. That logic applies here: what holds these practices together is not a single aesthetic position but a shared structural condition, the artist-run ecosystem of Dimensions Variable, where making and mutual support have always been inseparable.
